Virginia State University Announces First-of-Its-Kind HBCU Studies Course

Aug 28, 2025

VSU continues to lead in recognizing and elevating the study of historically Black colleges and universities.

Virginia State University is proud to announce the upcoming launch of the world’s first HBCU Studies course in Family and Consumer Sciences, starting in Fall 2025. This announcement builds on the University’s previous groundbreaking achievement of offering the first-ever HBCU History course.

The new course, FACS 425: The HBCU Family, will be taught by Dr. Jada Brooks and explore factors related to the family experience at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“We are thrilled to introduce the world’s first HBCU Studies course in Family and Consumer Sciences,” said Dr. Jada Brooks, Interim Chair and Professor of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. “This course will allow students to explore the HBCU experience through a curricular lens. At VSU, we are always striving for Greater, and this new academic offering reflects our commitment to being a preeminent HBCU.”

The course will also explore how HBCUs have influenced family culture and impacted Black communities across generations. Topics include the familial atmosphere of HBCU campuses, multigenerational college attendance, and the institutions’ broader influence on Black family life.

The University is excited to launch another course that will help deepen and define the HBCU experience. Registration for the upcoming semester is already open, so students interested in taking the course are encouraged to enroll now.
